A homegrown terrorist outfit that emerged from the Students Islamic Movement of India, the Indian Mujahideen announced its existence with a series of coordinated bombings that targeted urban centers in the middle of the last decade, culminating in the deadly attack on the German Bakery, a popular tourist destination in the city of Pune, in 2010. It also played a supporting role in the four-day assault on Mumbai landmarks in 2008. The group aims to establish a caliphate (Islamic state) covering South Asia and is connected to other terrorist entities with similar goals, including Lashkar-e-Taiba and Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami. The Indian Mujahideen is thought to have received assistance from Pakistan's intelligence agency.
