Jemaah Islamiyah (JI; "Islamic Congregation") is an Islamic terrorist group that aims to overthrow secular governments in Southeast Asia and found a Shari'a state covering Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, and the southern Philippines. Formed in the 1990s, it has conducted a string of bombings, the most infamous of which was the Bali nightclub attack of 2002, murdering 202 people. JI's near-misses have included a 1995 plan to destroy 11 U.S. commercial airliners over the Pacific and a 2001 plot against U.S. Navy targets in Singapore. Recent years have seen its actions overshadowed by those of splinter groups and other Indonesian terrorists who learned the ropes as operatives for JI.
