Rapid Intervention Regiment
Not yet designated terrorist by a Western country Base of operations: Syria, Iraq
The Rapid Intervention Regiment is an Iraqi Shi'a militia that operates under the cause of defending the Sayyida Zainab shrine in the Damascus area, led by one Ahmed Haji al-Sa'adi (though for a time in Syria it was led by Ahmad Abu Haqi). It has notably been a participant in the regime offensive on al-Mleha in East Ghouta. Ideologically it appears to espouse affinity with Muqtada al-Sadr. Since at least May/June 2014, many members of the Rapid Intervention Regiment redeployed from Syria to Iraq, though in the end the group never entirely left Syria and has been fighting on both fronts as of 2015.
