Launched in 2008 by extremist cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, co-founder and former leader of Jemaah Islamiyah, Jemaah Anshorut Tauhid (JAT; "Partisans of the Oneness of God") is a terrorist organization that aims to turn Indonesia into the center of a new caliphate under a strict interpretation of Islamic law. In line with its publicly professed beliefs that violence against perceived enemies of Islam is religiously sanctioned, JAT has assaulted soldiers, police, judges, and other functionaries of the Indonesian government. Churches and mosques have been targeted as well. Now in prison, Bashir has declared a desire to see the United States suffer a terrorist attack larger than 9/11 and ultimately be destroyed.
