Database: Identifiers of Designated Islamic Terrorist Organizations
Liwa al-Imam Muhammad al-Jawad al-Awal
Not yet designated terrorist by a Western country Base of operations: Iraq
Liwa al-Imam Muhammad al-Jawad al-Awal- named for the ninth Shi'a Imam- is a Shi'a militia operating in Iraq. Led by one Abu Janan al-Basri (Mehdi Saleh Abd al-Wahid), the group is based primarily in the Basra area, claiming operations in the Hamrin Mountains, Salah ad-Din province (e.g. Balad and Dujail districts) and most recently (as of July 2015) in Anbar. Based on the group's social media output, there appear to be close links with the Badr Organization. Considering that Badr is an Iranian proxy, it is unsurprising that Liwa al-Imam Muhammad al-Jawad al-Awal also identifies with Iran ideologically. Further, in a recent interview with the maintainer of this database, a media representative for the militia affirmed the group has Badr fighters in its ranks: a common phenomenon of membership overlap among militias.
