Jabhat Ansar al-Din: Analysis and Interview

Jabhat Ansar al-Din ("Supporters of Religion Front") was a coalition of four jihadi groups announced in Syria in July 2014, comprising Harakat Sham al-Islam, the Green Battalion, Jaysh al-Muhajireen wa al-Ansar, and Harakat Fajr al-Sham al-Islamiya. The coalition aspires to the establishment of Shari'a in Syria and needs to be seen in light of competition with other jihadi groups (Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State) that have carved or are carving out their own state/proto-state projects.

Since its inception, the Green Battalion merged with Jaysh al-Muhajireen wa al-Ansar, which itself joined Jabhat al-Nusra in fall 2015. As of November 2015, only Harakat Sham al-Islam and Harakat Fajr al-Sham al-Islamiya remain in Jabhat Ansar al-Din.

In December 2016, the remaining coalition components formally united as one entity. On 28 January 2017, Jabhat Ansar al-Din joined with four other factions to form Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham.
