Turkestan Islamic Party
Designated terrorist by: U.S. Base of operations: China, Pakistan, Syria. Background: Council on Foreign Relations
The Turkestan Islamic Party (also known as the East Turkestan Islamic Movement) is an organization dedicated to creating a separate Muslim Uighur entity in the Xinjiang region of China. While there has been debate as to the extent to which the group has ties with the likes of al-Qa'ida, the jihadi orientation and affinities with al-Qa'ida are particularly borne out the group's more recent representation in Syria, where the group has played a key role in the Idlib province offensives in 2015 that drove the Assad regime presence out of all major localities of the province.
