Liwa al-Imam al-Qa'im ('The Arising Imam Brigade', in reference to the Mehdi/Messiah in Shi'a Islam) is a Shi'a militia that first came to light in a video from May 2013, announced as a formation to "protect the sons of our oppressed people from the takfiris [reference to Sunni extremists, especially the Islamic State] and the Saddamists." It has since been primarily known for operations in the Jurf al-Sakhr area to the south of Baghdad. The militia is reportedly led by one 'Sheikh Talib al-Alayawi'.
