Green Battalion
Not yet designated as terrorist by a Western country
Base of operations: Syria
Background: Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi
The Green Battalion is a jihadist group founded by Saudi foreign fighters in Syria in summer 2013. It was initially based primarily in Damascus province (specifically the Qalamoun area), but it has also conducted operations in Homs and Aleppo provinces. In Qalamoun, it had worked with both the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra. The group's origins lie in the fact that its founders did not wish to take sides in the Islamic State-Jabhat al-Nusra dispute, hence the formation of an independent group while still espousing the same ideology of a caliphate. The Green Battalion has now pledged allegiance to Jaysh al-Muhajireen wa al-Ansar as part of its membership of the Jabhat Ansar al-Din coalition.
