Ajnad Misr
Designated terrorist by: UK Base of operations: Egypt Background: Ajnad Misr, Egypt's latest jihadist group
Ajnad Misr ('Soldiers of Egypt') is a group whose existence first came to public light in January 2014 and has since been known as the main group responsible for attacks in the Cairo area, as part of a declared campaign to target the Egyptian government and its security forces. Unlike Ansar Bait al-Maqdis (which eventually pledged allegiance to the Islamic State as its 'Sinai Province'), evidence does not suggest leanings towards the Islamic State, even though when Ajnad Misr first emerged, its members were described by Ansar Bait al-Maqdis as 'our brothers' (standard jihadi rhetoric, to be sure). On a more general level, the emergence of Ajnad Misr is indicative of a growing jihadi trend within Egypt since the coup against the Muslim Brotherhood-led government of Muhammad Morsi in summer 2013.
