Hezbollah (Arabic for "Party of Allah") is a Shiite terrorist group that was founded in 1982 after Israel's intervention during the Lebanese civil war. Closely aligned with the Iranian theocracy and functioning as a "state within a state" in Lebanon, Hezbollah aided Shiite militias in Iraq after the U.S. invasion, supports Palestinian jihadists in their war against Israel, and has sent fighters to Syria to defend the Assad regime against Sunni insurgent forces. The Obama administration has described Hezbollah as "the most technically capable terrorist group in the world." It was Hezbollah that bombed the U.S. embassy and Marine barracks in 1983 and hijacked TWA Flight 847 in 1985. The group is likely also responsible for the deadly bombings of Jewish institutions in Argentina in 1992 and 1994, the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri, and the 2012 bombing of a Bulgarian bus filled with Israeli tourists. There have been concerns about Hezbollah activity in Latin America and its operatives crossing the Mexican border into the U.S.
