Background: Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium
The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades is the "military wing" of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas. Following the Oslo Accords of 1993 and continuing through the Second Intifada, it repeatedly targeted Israeli civilians via small-arms attacks, rocket fire, and some of the most infamous suicide bombings of the era. The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades takes its name from a Palestinian cleric who established the Black Hand, an anti-Zionist, anti-British militant organization during the British Mandate period.
